Is it safe to visit Makronissos Tombs alone?

Yes, of course! Ayia Napa is safe day and night. Super low crime rate!

What’s the story behind Makronissos Tombs?

The Tombs of Makronissos were discovered in 1872.  Archaeologists finally rocked up in 1989.

What took them 117 years? Your guess is as good as mine. Reckon they got stuck on Odysseus’s route and just kept sailing in circles. 🤔⛵️

The tomb raiders? They skipped the Odyssey bit and went direct. 🏴‍☠️⚔️💰

The proper dig started in November 1989 and was all wrapped up by January 1990 — quick job, that (clearly got their priorities sorted this time).

Nineteens tombs from the Hellenistic and Roman eras — that’s what they found. Not too shabby for a couple of months’ work, innit?

Most of the Makronissos Ancient Tombs are still in rather good nick (a bit dusty but nothing a broom couldn’t fix).

Sadly, a few tombs took a bit of a beating ages ago when cheeky Cypriots nicked the stones to build their gaffs. 🏠 Can’t beat free bricks, I suppose. 🧱

A typical Makronissos Tomb comes with a stepped dromos — the ancient Greek word for the approach to the burial chamber — plus a stomion (the tomb’s version of a front door).

Back in the day, they sealed it all up with slabs of calcarenite (think the ancient world’s version of flat-pack stonework). 😂🥁😉

Inside, the burial chambers are very much cut from the same cloth — or rather, the same rock. 😏

There’s a rectangular hollow slap bang in the middle of the floor and stone benches carved into the walls. Looks a bit like an ancient waiting room if you ask me… just without the magazines. 😂🥁😉

Some Makronissos Ancient Tombs have a little bonus niche in the burial chamber. The posh ones? Two chambers and room for up to five bodies. Quite the family plot for the bigwigs.

Pro tip: if you pop over to Thalassa Municipal Museum in Ayia Napa, you’ll get to eyeball a cracking sarcophagus nicked straight from the Makronissos Tombs.

What’s the story behind Makronissos Sanctuary?

During their rummage around the Ancient Cemetery of Makronissos, archaeologists came across what looks like a cult site — basically a big stone rectangle, cobbled together with whatever rocks were lying about. The fancy name of the ancient cult site? Makronissos Sanctuary.

The handful of offerings dug up there point to the cult site being in use during the Hellenistic era (that’s 323 to 30 BC, if you’re counting) and the Roman period after that (all the way up to 324 AD). Not exactly yesterday!

Is there parking at Makronissos Tombs?

Paphos 25 March Parade 2024 turned the town upside down

Oi oi, party animal! 😎 Think the whole of Paphos having a proper knees-up: proud Cypriots clapping and cheering as the war veterans marched past, the National Guard lot strutting their stuff and young ‘uns marching in sync like proper troopers 🫡🪖 (enough mini-flag waving at the Paphos 25 March Parade to give your arm a decent workout).

Alright, how’s it going? My name’s Markus Krenn and I’m the best travel expert for Cyprus. My posts about what Cyprus is really all about? Only gone and been read over a million times!

My Cyprus travel guides at markuskrenn.com and markuskrenn.blog are the most widely read Cyprus travel blogs in English and German.

I live in sunny Cyprus — just a hop, skip and a jump from Ayia Napa. Swapped German grey skies for year-round sunshine. Best decision ever!

My Cyprus travel blog is all about fun and offbeat things to do in Ayia Napa, Protaras, Pernera, Kapparis and Paralimni. We’re talking unmissable things to do in Cyprus, what living in Cyprus is really like, the lot.

The Greek Independence Day parade in Paphos is one of those Cyprus festivals you’ll be banging on about for ages (even if you haven’t the foggiest what was actually going on).

Why all the Greek and Cypriot flag waving? ‘Cos 25 March marks the start of the Greek War of Independence back in 1821.

In a nutshell: basically, the Greeks giving the Ottoman Empire the old ‚on your bike!’ and kicking off their fight for freedom!

Now, why are the Cypriots joining in? Easy-peasy — Greeks and Cypriots are like two peas in a pod. Same lingo (just with a bit of a twang), same religion, same culture and a shared history that’s thicker than a proper bowl of porridge.

Greek and Cypriot flags flapped in the spring breeze, while the sun turned the Greek Independence Day parade in Paphos into a golden glow-up. And the marching band? Proper Cyprus festivals vibes!

Fancy a gander? (Go on, say ‘yes’… 😉) Lovely jubbly! Grab yourself a cuppa or a frappé, put your feet up and have a butcher’s at my snaps. Let that Mediterranean zest for life whisk you away to sun soaked Paphos. Cheers, mate!

Is a weekly bus pass in Ayia Napa worth it?

If you’re heading to Ayia Napa, I’d definitely recommend you grab the weekly bus pass. It’s a proper bargain at just €25 (≈£21.5) — that’s less than a Sunday roast with a pint at your local pub back home.

This little beauty is valid for a full seven days from purchase. And here’s the kicker: you can hop on and off those buses like you’re playing musical chairs. 😎🚍

If you’re keen to be a proper holidaymaker and explore every nook and cranny of Ayia Napa (and hidden gems like Protaras, Pernera and Paralimni) without wearing out your flip-flops, this one’s for you.

Unlimited bus rides on all Ayia Napa bus routes mean you can zip around like a proper holidaymaker on a mission, checking out every beach, boozer and bit of culture that takes your fancy.

No need to faff about with loose change either — one bus pass sorts you out for your entire hols. Sorted!

Only got five days in Ayia Napa, innit? No worries. I’ve got you sorted. There’s a proper bargain on — a 5-day pass for just €20 (≈£17.2).

Do I need to buy bus tickets in advance in Ayia Napa?

No need for a treasure hunt, mate. Just grab your tickets straight from the bus driver.

One tiny detail though: they’re strictly cash-only on all buses (old habits die hard, as they say.)

Here’s a top tip that’ll make you everyone’s favourite fellow passenger: if you’ve got the exact change ready whilst queuing (and let’s face it, all Brits do love a proper queue) you’ll be the hero keeping things moving along nicely.

Nobody wants to be the muppet counting out cents while there’s a bus full of sweaty holidaymakers waiting, right? 🥵🚍

Which bus company serves Ayia Napa?

Well, there’s this rather quirky bunch called OSEA running the town buses. Strange name, I know but bear with me.

Their proper title is something of a mouthful — Famagusta District Transportation Organisation (blimey, try saying that after a pint!).

Come 2029, they’ll be celebrating their big twenty (not too shabby for a bus company, innit?).

The lovely lot from Paralimni don’t just stick to Ayia Napa, Protaras, Pernera and their home turf. Their buses zip off to the neighbouring villages of Xylofagou, Xylotymbou and Ormideia (crikey, more tongue-twisters for you) too.

Alright, those three tongue-twister villages are technically Larnaca district but let’s not get bogged down in bureaucratic waffle. The important bit is getting you there in one piece. 😂🥁😉

Ayia Napa buses win big for budget travel

In a nutshell: our modern buses in Cyprus (no, they’re not the rickety old double-deckers like back in your neck of the woods) will whisk you around every corner of Ayia Napa and Protaras faster than you can say “another round of pints”. 🍻😎

And with our day pass, 5-day pass or 7-day pass you’ll save enough dosh for a few of those cheeky cocktails at Nissi Beach (quite the bargain, innit?).

Well, here’s a bit of good news for my UK readers — no need to dust off that old Greek phrasebook!

While our bus drivers enjoy having a proper natter in Greek (and who can blame them?), they’ve all learned English at school and speak it well.

Just a heads-up: keep it simple, stupid. No need to go full Cockney rhyming slang or test out your best Geordie accent.

Plain English will do the trick (save your ‘innit’s’ and ‘bloody’s’ for the pub back home).

If you follow this simple rule our Ayia Napa bus drivers will get you sorted faster than you can say ‘mine’s a pint!’. 😎🍺

Have a cracking hols in Cyprus. 🇨🇾🏖️🌴 Take care! Cheers, Markus

Alright, listen up, mate. After Vathia Gonia Beach stop things are about to get proper interesting! When your trusty bus 101 swings into that roundabout with the cracking fish sculpture, it’s time to get your game face on and prep for your stop!

Have a gander at the snap below. That’s the roundabout you’re looking for. Rather swish, isn’t it?

A stunning photo of Ayia Napa’s Cuddling Fish Roundabout, which is just a hop, skip and jump from Ayia Napa Harbour.

Time to shine, mate! Give that stop button a cheeky press and Bob’s your uncle. Hop off after the Cuddling Fish Roundabout (before your trusty bus huffs and puffs up that hill to Ayia Napa Square).

Accidentally hopped off at the hilltop (Ayia Napa Square)? No worries! You’re just a hop, skip and a jump from Ayia Napa Harbour. Simply toddle downhill towards the sea — couldn’t be easier if you tried.

Not keen on playing scout with directions? Chuck your mobile into action! It’ll be your local guide, smooth as you like.

Apple Maps? Bless it — it tries. But trust me, even your iPhone wants you to use Google! 😂🥁😉

Top tip: Google Maps knows Ayia Napa better than your local chippy knows cod ‘n’ chips. Bang in X2J3+W5 and let the tech sort it out. 🧭🔍

Is there parking at Ayia Napa Harbour?

How much is bottled water in Ayia Napa?

I bought 1L water for €1 at the hotel shop (Ayia Napa 2025)

Are ice cubes in Cyprus made from tap water?

Yes! Hotels in Cyprus use safe tap water for ice cubes.

Are holidaymakers having ice in their drinks in Ayia Napa?

Yes, they do. Ice cubes made from Cyprus tap water are perfectly safe.

I’m always chucking ice cubes in my drinks too. I’ve never had any dodgy stomach issues, no matter what I’ve eaten or drunk in Cyprus. But hey, that’s just my experience! It’s totally up to you whether you fancy ice cubes in your drinks or not.

What’s the best way to avoid getting a dodgy tummy in Ayia Napa?

Here’s how to avoid a dodgy stomach if you’ve got a sensitive tummy that always kicks up a fuss on hols: stick to bottled water rather than tap water (Cyprus tap water is perfectly safe to drink but can upset delicate stomachs).

After you’ve brushed your teeth, use bottled water to rinse your mouth.

And if your stomach’s really playing up, skip the ice cubs in your drinks (they’re made with tap water, so same story there).

Should I stick to bottled water in Ayia Napa?

You might be thinking: why faff about with bottled water when Cyprus tap water is perfectly safe to drink?

Well, here’s the thing:

Healthy for you: sparkling water isn’t just refreshing — it’s actually good for your health too. The natural minerals don’t just make it taste brilliant — they also give your body some essential nutrients. So, if you’re after a healthy way to stay hydrated on your hols in Ayia Napa or Protaras, sparkling water’s a proper good shout.

Always spot on: every step, from the spring to the bottle, is properly checked to make sure it’s bang on. Every time you grab a bottle on your hols in Ayia Napa or Protaras, you’re getting top-notch drinking water.

Cheap as chips: sparkling water isn’t just good for your health — it’s also cheap as chips. You’ll find it in every corner shop or supermarket. Loads of sizes in handy plastic bottles — affordable, top-notch drinking water in Cyprus. So, you can make a healthy choice on your hols in Ayia Napa or Protaras without breaking the bank.

Does Cyprus use desalinated seawater for tap water?

Picture Ayia Napa: stunning beaches, endless sunshine and rain that’s about as common as a heatwave in Brighton. 😂🥁😉

We’re talking maybe thirty drizzly days a year in Cyprus — if that! Bit of a pickle when you’ve got about a million folks living on the island, innit?

But here’s where it gets clever — those crafty Cypriots didn’t just sit around waiting for rain like other folks do!

Since the late 90s, they’ve been doing something quite brilliant: turning seawater from the Med into top-notch drinking water. I know, sounds like something out of a sci-fi film, innit?

Here’s the kicker: about seventy percent of drinking water in Cyprus comes from this seaside magic trick (aka ‘desalination’ if you want to sound posh at the pub 🍻😏).

The Cypriots basically boss about the salt in the seawater. They order all the salt to hop it, leaving fab drinking water behind. Proper clever stuff, innit?

Now, even though this mix of desalinated seawater and groundwater ticks all the EU’s boxes (and they’re pickier than my gran at a buffet), many Cypriots still go for bottled water. Old habits die hard, as they say.

Cyprus tap water is safe, top-notch and drinkable

In a nutshell: although Cyprus tap water is regulated as meticulously as a London traffic light (and that’s saying something!), many Cypriots still sprint to the supermarket for bottled water faster than a Brit legging it for the last night bus. 🚏🚌

Can’t blame them — sparkling water’s not just refreshing but packed with more good stuff than your gran’s Sunday roast! 😂🥁😉

Every drop of bottled water in Cyprus is checked more thoroughly than a teenager’s bedroom before a royal visit. 🤣😂😹

And the best bit? You can grab these lovely bottles of refreshment from any corner shop in Ayia Napa, Protaras, Pernera, Kapparis and Paralimni. They’re as common as umbrellas in Manchester! ☔️😉

Have a cracking hols in Cyprus. 🇨🇾🏖️🌴 Take care! Cheers, Markus

Where can I buy a UK plug adapter?

Alright, let’s sort you out with a travel adapter for Cyprus, shall we? (Go on, say ‘yes’ … 😉) Lovely jubbly!

In Cyprus we use UK plugs. Any type G Cyprus travel adapter will work just fine for you. You’ve got a couple of options to get your mitts on a Cyprus travel adapter before you jet off to Ayia Napa or Protaras.

Fancy a bit of old-school shopping? Pop down to your local electrical shop and have a gander in the travel bits and bobs section. Can’t find it? Don’t be a numpty — just ask for a type G Cyprus travel adapter. The shop assistant won’t give you grief, I promise!

More of a couch surfer? No worries, mate. Fire up your laptop and hit the internet. ‘Amazon’ is always a safe bet or you could try ‘eBay’ if you’re after a bargain. Just make sure you’re not buying some dodgy knock-off that’ll go up in smoke faster than your hols tan. 😂🥁😉

For my mates across the pond, ‘Best Buy’ is your go-to in the USA and Canada. Aussies, give ‘Kogan’ a whirl. And if you’re in South Africa, ‘Takealot’ or ‘Loot’ should sort you right out.

Remember, you want a standard type G travel adapter for Cyprus — none of those fancy universal jobbies! Keep it simple and you’ll be golden.

Alright, mate. Pop down to your local electrical shop before all the good ones are gone!

What countries use the same plug as Cyprus?

Well, well, well, look at you, thinking ahead! Thinking of taking your Cyprus travel adapter on a world tour, are you?

Alright, listen up, mate! Your little socket sidekick isn’t just a one-trick pony for Cyprus. Oh, no, it’s got a few more tricks up its sleeve!

Fancy a cheeky weekend in Blighty? 🇬🇧 (Go on, say ‘yes’ … 😉) Lovely jubbly! Your Cyprus travel adapter got you covered.

Thinking of chasing leprechauns in Ireland? 🇮🇪 It’ll work a treat there too.

Dreaming of a cheeky holiday to sun-soaked Malta? 🇲🇹 You’re sorted, mate!

But wait, there’s more! If you’re up for venturing further afield, your trusty type G Cyprus travel adapter will be your best mate in Gibraltar 🇬🇮, Hong Kong 🇭🇰, Macau 🇲🇴, Singapore 🇸🇬, Malaysia 🇲🇾, Seychelles 🇸🇨 and Mauritius 🇲🇺 too. It’s like a magic key to a whole world of working sockets!

So, there you have it — your travel adapter for Cyprus is more well-travelled than most gap year students.

Be a smart cookie and chuck a type G Cyprus travel adapter in your bag. Otherwise, you might end up trying to charge your phone with a tea bag. 🤡😂🤣 And trust me, that never ends well! 😏

Can I charge my phone with the shaver socket?

Alright, clever clog! Spotted that shaver socket in your Ayia Napa hotel bathroom and thought you’d outsmart the system, did you? Well, hold your horses!

Technically, yeah, you could jam your phone charger in there faster than you can say ‘selfie stick’. But listen up, clever clog — it’s about as welcome as a wasp at a picnic.

That little socket’s made for your bathroom gizmos. It’s not the all-you-can-eat buffet of electricity you might think it is. 😂🥁😉

Your hotel bathroom socket is like a well-travelled diplomat — it speaks both 230V and 115V.

230-volt is spot on for shavers, dryers, hair straighteners and leccy toothbrushes from the UK, Europe, Australia and South Africa. 115-volt does the trick for the USA and Canada.

Now off you pop and charge up. Those hols snaps won’t take themselves, will they? 😎🤳🏖️

Where can I buy a UK plug adapter in Ayia Napa?

Oi, oi, you forgetful holidaymaker! 🙃 Left your travel adapter for Cyprus at your gaff, did you?

No need to get your knickers in a twist — I’ll sort you out quicker than you can say ‘fish and chips’!

First stop on your hunt for a Cyprus travel adapter: mosey on down to your hotel reception. Give them your best sheepish smile and ask if they’ve got any going spare.

You’d be surprised — some hoteliers are proper lifesavers and might even lend you one. It’s worth a go, innit?

No joy at reception? Don’t throw in the towel just yet!

Time for a bit of a treasure hunt. Pop down to the local supermarket or corner shop (just follow the smell of sun cream and desperation). 😂🥁😉

Have a gander in their travel bits and bobs section. You might just strike gold!

Lost in Ayia Napa like a proper Brit in a salad bar? No worries, mate! Just toddle back to reception and flash those pearly whites.

How much is a UK travel adapter in Ayia Napa?

A decent travel adapter for Cyprus will set you back less than a tenner. Proper bargain, that!

Prefer something more swish? If you’re after one with USB charging ports, you’ll need to splash out a bit more. Could be looking at up to fifteen euros then.

Fair warning: they’ll fleece you at the airport! 🐑 ✂️ Only buy there if you’re desperate — prices are mental! 💶🤯

Travel adapter for Cyprus — key item on your Cyprus packing list

In a nutshell: If you’re from the UK, Ireland or Malta, you’ve hit the jackpot! Your plugs will work in Cyprus without any faff. Lucky you, innit?

For the rest of you lot, best grab a Cyprus travel adapter before you jet off to Ayia Napa or Protaras. Otherwise, you might find yourself in a bit of a pickle.

Picture this: you’ve just rocked up to your swanky hotel room, ready to start your hols shenanigans. Your phone’s clinging to life with 2% battery left and you’re itching to post that cheeky ‘airport to paradise’ selfie.

But oh no! Your trusty charger’s about as useful as a soggy biccie. Talk about a holiday mood killer!

Be a smart cookie and chuck a type G Cyprus travel adapter in your bag. Now, off you pop and get packing!

Have a cracking hols in Cyprus. 🇨🇾🏖️🌴 Take care! Cheers, Markus
