Paphos 25 March Parade 2024 turned the town upside down

Oi oi, party animal! 😎 Think the whole of Paphos having a proper knees-up: proud Cypriots clapping and cheering as the war veterans marched past, the National Guard lot strutting their stuff and young ‘uns marching in sync like proper troopers 🫡🪖 (enough mini-flag waving at the Paphos 25 March Parade to give your arm a decent workout).

The Greek Independence Day parade in Paphos is one of those Cyprus festivals you’ll be banging on about for ages (even if you haven’t the foggiest what was actually going on).

Why all the Greek and Cypriot flag waving? ‘Cos 25 March marks the start of the Greek War of Independence back in 1821.

In a nutshell: basically, the Greeks giving the Ottoman Empire the old ‚on your bike!’ and kicking off their fight for freedom!

Now, why are the Cypriots joining in? Easy-peasy — Greeks and Cypriots are like two peas in a pod. Same lingo (just with a bit of a twang), same religion, same culture and a shared history that’s thicker than a proper bowl of porridge.
